Zap's memory was apparently erased by Naveed Catlos in what seemed to be an act of vengance against Gunner Stryfe. Though details regarding the incident remain sketchy, it is clear that Naveed had a pivotal role in the fiasco that led to Zap becoming the captain of the Excelsior.

Once chosen as captain, Zap quickly fell for the ships first-mate, Reona Lightstar and soon promised to protect her from harm at all costs. Zap is on short terms with Grontar Grott, who is also fiercely protective of Reona, and Robot, who barely tolerates Zap's lack of common sense. Kasey the Stickle is rather fond of Zap, seeing his simple nature and loyalty as endearing traits that would make him a good romantic match for Reona.

Zap and Excelsior share a psychic bond that Zap poorly skilled at controlling and he often cannot tap into the ships powers enough to make use of Excelsior's special psychic controls.

Through his training with Gunner, Zap is revealed to have a darker side that manifests itself when his latent psychic abilities take over. Gunner is determined to bring out this darkness in Zap, what he calls Zap's "true self."
